Full Description
During evaluation trenching in Pound Lane Car Park a number of water logged features were found (TR 15 NW 606 & 607). Three deeper trenches were dug within the main trench which, due to their size, did not recover any earlier feature but did produce a quantity of 2nd-3rrd Century pottery and tile, animal bone and the remains of most of an iron shod wooden spade. The upper end of the spade shows no evidence of a T or D handle grip and the angle of the blade indicates that in modern terms it would be classified as a spade rather than a shovel.(1)
