Summary

A watching brief on work for new extension revealed two post-medieval quarry pits adjacent to an outcrop of Kentish Ragstone. A quantity of pottery and some clay pipes suggest that the earlier quarry pit had been back filled c.1720-1775.

Full Description

Watching brief on work for new extension revealed two post-medieval quarry pits adjacent to an outcrop of Ragstone. Little was foundon the site of interest except the two sizable pits one cut into the other. Each quarry pit would have been substantially backfilled with the waste stone and soil from the succeeding quarry. Dating material from the quarries is scare, with only one deposit producing an abundance of pottery ranging in date between c.1475 - c.1825 (deposited c.1725/50-1775. Also five clay tobacco pipe-bowls were recovered of a simialr date suggesting a date range by the pottery for deposition of c.1720 - 1750/75.(1)
