Full Description
Evaluation at G.K.N Scaffolding Yard, Hospital Lane, Canterbury in 1994 uncovered evidence for Roman and early medieval activity comprising:
An intact and well-compacted metallings of gravel and flints, which could possibly have been part of a courtyard or attached to the Roman building to the north west. Large quantities of Roman building material (fragments of roof tile, floor tile and mortar) as well as potsherds and oyster shell.
A backfilled posthole and a large steeply cut feature, whose function were unclear, were dated no later then the mid-late 7th century.
In the north east area of the site the corner of a deep cut structure of mortar-bonded flint was uncovered.
Amongst the Roman material recovered there were a number of angled flue tile fragments that are the same description as those found in 1868, and are evidence of a substantial Roman building in this area (TR 15 SW 135).
A deep cut structure was partially exposed, constructed of multiple courses of large flints bonded with mortar dating to an early medieval date, it's depth suggests it may have been a cess tank. (1)
