Full Description

Description and Analysis of Trebor Bassett Factory, St Peters Street, Maidstone in Feb 2002 was carried out in advance of redevelopment of the site, which will result in the demolition of the existing buildings.

The factory comprises buildings ranging in date from the late 19th century through to the late 20th century and incorporated a former council engineering works, the early 20th century Sharps sweet factory, 1930s factory extensions as well as two major redevelopments in the 1960s. The building within the western part of the site is believed to be a former bus depot.

The site has been associated with sweet manufacturing, in particular toffee since the early 20th century. Owned by Edward Sharp, the success of Sharps sweets and toffees lead to the expansion of the site in the 1930s. Later the company was purchased by Trebor Bassets and finally by Cadbury Schweppes.
