Monument record TQ 94 SW 35 - Chapel (possible site of), Etchden Farm

Summary

A chapel of Hecchisdenne in the parish of Bethersden is mentioned in a grant from c.1194. Hecchisdenne or Etchden is mentioned in 1389 as Heithesdenne in Betevisdene. The house has no remains of antiquity but the moat, partly filled with water, is still visible. A wooden cattle shed has always been called "the chapel," and a few years ago a paved path leading to it from the house was discovered below the soil. There is a mention in a will of a bequest to the "Light of the Blessed Mary of Achenden" in 1471. The alleged site of the chapel is occupied by a cattle shed as described above and no trace of it remains.
