Monument record TR 05 SE 159 - Post medieval pits, Chilham Primary School
Summary
Two pits were found during work to convert an above ground air-raid shelter into a classroom. The fill of the earliest pit consisted of bottles, china, pottery and glass of 18th century date. On the basis of this evidence the pit is thought to have been a rubbish pit at the rear of a property occupied by an apothecary or doctor. The other pit was far larger and cut the rubbish pit: this is likely to have been a cesspit or septic tank.

Full Description
During a watching brief on work to convert an above ground air-raid shelter (TR 05 SE 158) into a classroom, two pits were found. The vast majority of the fill of the earliest pit consisted of bottles, china, pottery and glass of 18th century date. This rubbish pit almost certainly was at the rear of a property occupied by a apothecary or doctor. This was cut by a larger pit which was likely to have been a cesspit or septic tank. (1)
