Full Description

(TR 14655822 deduced from OS 1:1250 1971) A rapid salvage excavation took place in April 1978 at 16-21 North Lane. The earliest find recovered on site was a badly damaged Roman kiln (TR 15 NW 474). A number of inhumation burials were also found, five excavated and two others observed, of around the 14th century. There were two double and one single burial ranging in age from around 12 years to 25 years old. The probable hurried nature of their burial and that they were buried in open ground outside of the city walls suggests that this may have been a plague cemetery of the 14th century. (1, 2)

Later reinterpretation of the burials suggests that they are likely to be late Roman/sub-Roman in date. (3)
