Monument record TR 15 NW 620 - ?medieval timber-framed buildings, North Lane, Canterbury

Summary

(TR 14655822 deduced from OS 1:1250 1971) Roman pottery kiln. A rapid salvage excavation took place in April 1978 at 16-21 North Lane. The earliest find recovered on site was a badly damaged Roman kiln (TR 15 NW 474 along with a number of medieval inhumations (TR 15 NW 619) These were sealed by the badly disturbed remains of a number of timber-framed buildings with clay floors. No plan of the buildings was possible, but a small heath and a number of wall-plates and chalk and flint dwarf walls were noted. In one area a number of medieval chimney pots and domestic pots were recovered. A well preserved 14th century pottery water, sewer?, pipe overlaying a primary clay floor and sealed by a later clay floor. The angle of the pipe indicates that it was taking water from the properties to the river.
