Excavations at 68- 69a Stour Street known as Cakebread Robey 4, and at Adelaide Place known as Cakebread Roby 5. Flanking the south edge of CB/R V was the verge of an early major Roman street, with multiple metallings. Running parallel and largely under Adelaide Place it is probably Watling Street. By the ealy 5th century Watling Street was reduced to half its former width.(1-4)

Cut by a late 13th- early 14th century pit, were deposits comprising layers of rammed gravel forming part of Watling Street. The metalling was covered by a layer of dark brown organic soil, c. 0.20m deep, containing tile fragments, charcoal and oyster shells.(5).
