Monument record TR 15 NE 420 - Possible Roman flood defences, Canterbury

Summary

Two Roman ditches, parallel to each other and to the river Stour. Seemingly not for channeling water primarily, possibly dug as flood water defences, allowing any flood water to flow through the ditches rather than flood the river banks and adjoining land. A raised deposit overlying the easternmost ditch suggests that this ditch was dug first then became backfilled, and the raised deposit is the resulting upcast from the second ditch being dug.
