Monument record TR 15 NE 432 - Roman feature with burnt sides, Canterbury
Summary
A very large feature with burnt vertical sides. It measured 5.5m northwest-southeast by at least 5.5m northeast-southwest. The feature was cut by one of the burials (TR 15 NE 431), as the burials have been dated as Roman, it can be assumed that the feature is also Roman. The sides of the feature consisted of in situ brickearth burnt back to a depth of approximately 0.15m. There were no signs of vitrification as a result of the burning. The feature was backfilled with grey silty soil mixed with occasional chalk flecks and nodules. It is not possible to interpretate the function of this feature, as there were no finds and the base of it was not reached.
