Full Description

Stripping of a road surface and demolition of a brick parapet revealed circa. 6m length of C14 defensive wall. It was constructed of fragmented chalk blocks, neither the internal or external flint face was exposed. Top section was rebuilt in 1769 and possibly formed a continuation of the bridge parapet, was probably eventually utilised for gardens of houses built at end C19. The oldest arrangement known for crossing the river is the use of the C14 defensive wall, crossing the Stour at 3 portcullised arches. These were demolished in 1769 and a new bridge constructed in 1792. This was replaced by the wooden "Long Bridge" in 1821, built only for pedestrians and a brick arch was constructed for horses and carts. A road bridge was in position by 1843- the standing structure to which the demolished parapet belongs.(1)
