Monument record TR 15 NE 433 - Post 12th Century Buildings (Remains Of)
Summary
Four trench-built crushed chalk foundations cutting into redeposited brickearth. Two of the foundations terminated 4cm from the roughly squared ends of the other two, which were north-south aligned. This arrangement may indicate that the corners of two buildings were represented. If so the buildings were 0.4m apart and were built against or formed part of the precinct wall. Such chalk-packed foundations usually characterise post twelfth century medieval construction in the Canterbury area.
Two of the foundations had three north-south aligned ridges of approximately 5cm height and 4cm width. Traces of mortar rendering covering some parts of their edges suggest these ridges represent all that remains of the original superstructure.
