Monument record TR 34 NW 244 - Hollow Feature, South of Pineham

Summary

During evaluation work along the line of the Witfield-Eastry Bypass a large depression was found, oval in shape and measuring about 55 metres by 42 metres and one metre deep. Excavation showed it to be a chalk cut feature which produced a few sherds of Iron Age and Roman pottery ( including fragments from a Dr27 samian cup). This feature could be a recent chalk quarry or a bomb crater, but with the pottery finds it could possibly be a quarry connected with the nearby Roman road.
