Monument record TR 23 NW 257 - Remains of Medieval Building, The Bayle
Summary
The site near the cliff edge and c.100 metres east of the parish church (TR 23 NW 26) was excavated in February 1975 prior to the development of the land for a house. The remains of a post-medieval dwelling house (TR 23 NW 94) fronting the modern street overlay and partially destroyed the foundations of an earlier structure of which three walls were located. At least three rooms were found but with no evidence of floors. Its relationship with the Priory (TR 23 NW 17) can only be speculated, but it may have formed part of the monastic complex. Pottery suggests the building was in use during the 13th or 14th centuries. It is likely that the south end of the building would have been destroyed by cliff erosion. Two post-holes and a small pit were beneath and sealed by these foundations (TR 23 NW 258).
