Findspot record TR 23 NW 259 - Roman Finds, The Bayle

Summary

The site near the cliff edge and c.100 metres east of the parish church (TR 23 NW 26) was excavated in February 1975 prior to the development of the land for a house. Both 1st century AD Belgic and Roman pottery, including samian ware and Oxfordshire ware of 2nd to 4th centuries were found during the excavation, which also recovered deposits from the post-medieval and medieval periods (TR 23 NW 94/257 & 258), and suggest nearby occupation. Leland in the 1540's noticed a laden burial ground and impressive ruins which included much Roman bonding-tile (see TR 23 NW 48). Lambarde in 1576 noted much the same and Stukeley in 1722 saw walls that appeared to be of Roman date and coins also of that period.
