Full Description

PROBABLY C18TH. TARRED WEATHERBOARDED BARN WITH STEEPLY PITCHED TILED ROOF. HIPPED AT ONE END AND HALF-HIPPED AT THE OTHER. AISLED BARN OF 4 BAYS.

Reference from Archaeological Survey: "Barn. Probably 17th century, maybe older origins, altered in the 18th century. Most is weatherboarded timber framing on red brick footings but northeast bay has wall of 18th century red brick (mostly Flemish garden bond). Roof of corrugated asbestos, formely thatch according to the farmer, and is hipped bothe ends. 4-bay aisled barn on rough northeast-southwest axis. Opposing full height double doors to the threshing floor in bay southwest of centre. Front (northwest onto lane) doorway recessed behind aisle, doors are missing. Rear doorway has midstrey porch with very low pitch monopitch roof. It contains ancient double plank doors and frame has slots for lower boards, and also has separate pedestrian door alongside to southwest. Interior shows that frmaing of main 3-bay section includes a great deal of reused timber and probably derives from two main building phases. Older (probably 17th century) carpentry most intact in rear (southeast) wall, and main trusses. Large aisle posts and main posts have formed jowls, normal assembly, straight arch braces to the tie beams and curving arch braces to the arcade plate. In rear wall frame each bay has central post with straight tension braces but southwest end wall and front wall frames later (probably 18th century) and of more slender scantling. 18th century brick bay northeast end was once floored. End wall includes row of 3 triple breathers and a blocked window in southeast side to ground floor. First floor window in end wall probably converted from loading hatch. 18th century roof above tie beam level; 9 bays defined by collard common rafter trusses (pegged joints) and clasped purlins."
