[Area centred TQ 76145873] On a plan of the church of Boxley Abbey, made c.1898 by G. Payne of which the author has what is probably the only copy. "Roman debris found all over this area" is noted of the area comprising the western end of the quire and the mouth of the south transept. (1) No further information could be obtained during fieldwork regarding this 'Roman debris'. The area indicated is under a lawn. (2) (TQ 76145873). In the foundations of the north transept and the presbytery many fragments of Roman roofing-tiles were incorporated. There were also clearly recognisable large pieces of box-tiles and fragments of opus signinum. This discovery substantiates the note on Bensted's sketch plan where he wrote "Roman debris found all over this area" on the crossing, and implies the presence of a Roman villa or other building on or near the site of the Abbey.
