Summary

A Neolithic polished flint axe was found during work to dig foundations for a new school in 1954. The axe was made of grey flint with a grey and white patina (veneer). It was polished smooth on both its surfaces and retained evidence of the original flaking. The axe was given to maidstone museum where it is thought to remain.

Full Description

TQ 58394209. A polished flint axe was found in excavating for a new school, approx. 500 feet east of the swimming bath behind the UDC offices at Southborough, at a depth of c. 2 feet in Tunbridge Wells sand. (a) The axe is made of grey flint with a grey-white patine. The flint is polished smooth on both its surfaces but in places it retains remains of the original flaking, dimensions length 7.25 ins, greatest breath 3.125 ins (see illus card). Deposited in Maidstone Mus. February 1954, by the former county architect. Mr S.H. Loweth. (1) The findspot was remembered and described in detail by Mr. Melvin (b),a member of the firm to which the construction job was sub-contracted out, and who was contacted through Mr. W.T. Ashley-Smith. The axe was found during digging for wall footings for the south blockof the school, halfway down E. side at TQ 58394207. Surveyed at 1:1250. (2)
