Full Description
Site of a super high velocity gun capable of firing a 256lb shell 70 miles. Nick-named Bruce it was never used operationally. The observation was carried out along the South coast towards Pevensey Bay. Some shells exploded while in flight but a shell was observed going into the sea off Pevensey Bay, a distance of 64 miles. The gun was not a success mainly due to the excessive wear on the barrel. It needed to be changed about every 30 rounds despite only being a 8-inch gun. Nothing remains now of the site other than the overgrown pit where the gun was located in a field. Two magazines were sited to the north of the gun, but neither seem to have survived. (1,2)
One gun emplacement with railway access, magazines and engine rooms. The gun was a 13.5 inch gun with a liner fitted inside the barrel reducing it to 8 inches so an 8 inch shell could be fired with a 13.5 inch charge. A range of 64 miles was achieved but the wear on the barrel was great, after 30 rounds the barrel required changing. It was not used in anger.
