Monument record TR 34 SE 150 - Railway Lines for 13.5" Railway Guns, St. Margaret's-at-Cliffe (site of)
Summary
Three 13.5" rail guns, HMG (His Majesties Gun) Sceneshifter, Piecemaker and Gladiator were stationed in the St Margaret’s-At-Cliffe area between September 1940 and May 1941. These guns were designed for attacking enemy shipping and artillery targets. They could also, in the event of a German invasion, be moved inland to shell the invasion beaches. They were serviced by an extension of an existing branch railway line at TR402743330. The track was removed after the war but the line of the supply track is visible from 1999 aerial photographs. The spur lines from which the guns would have fired are visible on the RAF 1946 aerial photographs and partly on the 1999 aerial photos held at Kent County Council. Munitions for these guns were stored close to the supply railway line at TR3543444727 (TR 34 SE 126).
