Full Description
During improvements to the existing building (TQ 76 NW 81) in 2001, the remains of a late Roman building, c.275 to 350 AD, were discovered. The excavation found mortared ragstone wall and floors, including an opus signinum floor, which seem to have been the northern corner of a building. Although disturbed by later medieval and post-medieval activity (TQ 76 NW *** and TQ 76 NW 329) part of a corridor may have been found but medieval pits to the west have removed much of the evidence for this. The exact function of the building is unclear, but it was possibly a town house.(1-2)
