Summary

An Iron Age cinerary urn and fragment of a polished flint axe thought to have been found near Powder Mill Lane in 1910. A previous exhibition in Tunbridge Wells Museum recorded the urn as having been found with a fossil sea urchin and a broken stone axe in it, and a cinerary urn was found c.1m away. The urn was said to have been made of a grey ware. The present whereabouts of these artefacts are uncertain.

Full Description

[Marginal] Exhibited in the Tunbridge Wells Mus. is an IA urn and a fragment of polished axe. A note with the exhibits states:- 'Iron Age pot found together with a fossil sea urchin and a broken stone axe in it 2' 6" below surface just north of Powder Mill Lane. A cinerary urn was found at the same level and 3 feet away. Found 1910". The urn of a grey ware about 4" high, 3 1/2" across the mouth and 2 1/2" across the base. It has no ornament. The fragment of axe is of polished flint, 2 1/2" long and 2" wide. The cinerary urn referred to is not exhibited and Mrs. Bradley, Curator of the Mus. has no knowledge of it. (1)
