Full Description

In 1993 a watching brief was undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust on the fields to the east of Canterbury Hill and St Stephens Hill, Tyler Hill. A third of the way along the field (moving south) a thick layer of ash and medieval pottery was found. This stretched in a more or less unbroken fashion in to the next field at a depth of 1m. This has been interpreted as evidence of extensive medieval clay extraction pits back filled with industrial waste, ash, rejected pottery and tile etc form nearby kilns. (1)
