Full Description
A small quarry is located in Ruffetts Wood, c.1.2km south east of Lamberhurst. A survey by the Babtie Group in 2002 measured the quarry at 35m north-south by 55m east-west. It was c.1m deep in the south and c.2.4m deep to the north. Primary access was probably to the east where a track led to the modern drive to Scotney Castle. The quarry had been subject to modern dumping but historic map evidence places the excavation of the quarry between 1852 and 1871.The surveyor suggested that the quarry could have been used to excavate the building material for the West Lodge of Scotney Castle (1).
Further excavation in 2003 suggested that the quarry had been worked into a seam of sandstone blocks, ideally suited for construction (2)
