Full Description
A disused quarry at Piercefield Shaw, Lamberhurst was surveyed as part of the archaeological works preparatory to the A21 Lamberhurst bypass in 2002. The quarry appears on the 1st edition OS map (c.1877). The quarry consists a series of cuts and is c.90m north-south x 90m east-west and up to 4m deep. No finds or features were recorded (1)
In 2003 the quarry was subjected to test-pitting in advance of the construction of the bypass although little additional information was obtained. The excavators concluded that the presence of brick and tile works at Scotney from the 18th century and the presence of clay and marl pits in the vicinity may suggest that the quarry for was clay extraction rather than building stone or ironstone (2)
