Monument record TQ 63 NE 35 - Bottle dump, near The Ruffets, Lamberhurst
Summary
A bottle dump was found during a survey prior to work on the A21 Lamberhurst bypass in 2002. The dump was close to two hop-pickers huts (TQ 63 NE 32 & 33) and had been used betwwen the 1920s to 1970s. In total 235 bottles were counted and 110 different types were identified. The earliest was from earlier than 1926/7 but the majority dated between the 1950s to the 1970s. The wide range in types indicated that the hop-pickers probably brought produce from home in London and also traded with local retailers.
