Full Description
Survey work at The Ruffetts in 2002 preparatory to the A21 Lamberhurst bypass examined a dump of bottles close to two hop-pickers huts (TQ 63 NE 32 & 33). The dump consisted of 235 bottles and 110 different types were identified. The earliest was from earlier than 1926/7 but the majority are from the 1950s to the 1970s. The surveyors believed that the range of types - 22 different types of milk bottles, squashes, cordials, beer and spirits - indicates that the hop-pickers would bring produce from home in London and also that there was trade with local retailers (1)
