Full Description

Chalk quarry to the south of Galley Hill Road and north of the railway line opened and in use supplying the Britannia Cement Works (TQ 67 NW 178), immediately to the north-east by last quarter of the 19th century. The quarry appears to be running down by the 1920s with more extraction to the south and redundant by the 1930s, when it is re-landscaped as a sports ground. A 19th century bridge in the north-eastern corner of the pit, carrying Galley Hill Road, enabled the passage of tramways to the Britannia Works and a railway spur from the North Kent Line to three further cement works, east of Botany Marshes and the Northfleet Paper Mills. The 19th century bridge still survives and is in constant use carrying traffic along Galley Hill, however all evidence of the rail spur and tramways below have been removed. The parapets of the 19th century bridge appear to have been rebuilt using similar yellow stock brick, although the piers and arch remain in an original, sound functional state.

The site is currently within the landtake of the CTRL and the majority has already been quarried away. No earthworks or cuttings survive. A large section of the chalk causeway below the modern Galley Hill Road bridge and between Kent Kraft Estate and KN570 is currently being excavated away in association with the path of the CTRL
