Monument record TQ 76 NW 353 - Site of early 17th Century Graveyard, Corporation Street, Rochester
Summary
During a watching brief at Hayward's House, a soil deposit, approximately 1m thick, was recorded containing a considerable quantity of human bone consisting of mainly limb bones with a few fragments of pelvic bone and skull. There was no sign of articulated bone, possibly as later burials had cut through earlier ones. Eighteenth century pottery was recovered from the top of the soil deposit, but no datable material was found form within the bone layer. The site is likely to be a new church yard shown on a map of Rochester dated 1633.
