Full Description

During boreholing and trenching for a geotenchical survey a crouched buiral of possible Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age was found within the loessic horizon. No further information is known. (1-2)

Evaluation of the route of the proposed Ramsgate Harbour Approach Road revealed a crouched inhumation burial. The grave was located in the eastern end of the trench, cutting through a layer of brickearth which overlay the chalk geology. It contained the remains of what is considered to be a late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age crouched burial. It was only partially exposed as at least half of the burial remains buried under the south section of the trench. Both of the lower legs and feet and part of the upper leg bones were visible as was on of the lower arm bones. Two deposits were recognised in the grave cut, an upper fill of a light brown brickearth with a maximum thickness of 0.5m and below this and surrounding the skeletal remains a 0.1m thick dark brown silty clay. No cultural material was found in association, but the nature of the burial suggsts that it is of Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age in date. (3)

the site was further investigated revealeing a complex series of prehistoric monuments of which this burial forms part of. (4)
