Full Description
In 1998 Archaeology South-East carried out a watching brief on topsoil stripping at Hawkinge Aerodrome. Two groups of cremations were found, dating to the Middle Bronze Age. One feature, a broad, shallow pit, contained a large quantity of burnt material, including bone. Discolouration of the natural subsoil at the base of the feature is almost certainly due to heat and it is believed that this may have been a pyre site. Nearby there was a large post hole. This may have been for a marker post. The features collectively belong to a Middle Bronze Age cremation cemetery. (1-2)
