Monument record TQ 94 NW 55 - Medieval sand pit, Brett's Sand Pit, Charing

Summary

A large irregular feature believed to have been a medieval sand pit was uncovered during archaeological investigations at Brett's Sand Pit. Over thirty sherds of 13-14th century pottery were found and it is thought that this feature was a quarry. Three medieval cooking pots were also found in close proximity and some connection between the pots and the quarry seems likely. The quarry may also be associated with parts of two rectangular enclosures previously found to the north east (TQ 94 NW 56).

Full Description

A large irregular feature cutting Iron Age features (TQ 94 NW 53). The natural sand has been dug away in a series of narrow and wide channels to a maximum depth of 2 metres. Over thirty shreds of 13-14th century pottery were found within the fill of what is believed to have been a quarry. To the south, 60 metres, three medieval cooking pots were found in a line over 3 metres. Only the bases survived, but some connection between the pots and the quarry seems likely. The quarry may have been associated in someway with parts of two rectangular enclosures to the north east. (TQ 94 NW 56). (1)
