Monument record TQ 57 SE 174 - Prehistoric Site/Structure?, Waterstone Park, Stone

Summary

Four post holes forming a square which may relate to a structure of prehistoric date. It has been suggested that this may have possibly been a grain store, the central part of a dwelling, or even a mortuary structure. No datable finds were found, only burnt flint, but it is likely that the post holes date to the prehistoric period.

Full Description

During evaluation work four postholes were recorded containing burnt flint. The features formed a small square and it is likely that they formed a structure of some kind. It has been suggested that this may have possibly been a grain store, the central part of a dwelling, or even a mortuary structure. No datable finds were found, only burnt flint, but it is likely that the post holes date to the prehistoric period. This site may relate to another prehistoric site found in 2000 not far to the north (TQ 57 SE 158). (1)
