Full Description

Following on from the evaluation work in the spring of 1997, at the site of the former Holy Trinity School, it was decided to fully excavate a large area in the most archaeologically sensitive part of the site. This work in the north western corner of the site revealed a number of features.:

A small part of a possible medieval boundary ditch was recorded in the north west corner of the excavated area, dated to the 13th century. It extended beyond the limits of the trench to the north and west. It was interpreted as a possible boundary or enclosure ditch, perhaps enclosing land associated with the medieval leper hospital, east of the site (TQ 57 SW 48).
The large medieval pottery assemblage recovered from the overburden by the Dartford District Archaeological Group has been interpreted as evidence of manuring. It could alternatively relate to activity associated with the nearby medieval leper hospital. The high status vessels may point to yet further activity in the area.

Other features identified were a Late Bronze Age/Iron Age pit (TQ 57 SW 250), an Early Medieval cemetery (TQ 57 SW 207) and an 11-12th century building and associated features (TQ 57 SW 251) [2].
