Full Description
A total of 37 deposits were found containing cremated human bone, although only 11 are thought to actually represent cremation burials with the rest representing incomplete burials or pyre-related deposits. Generally all the features related to the burials are circular in shape, 0.25m - 0.30m in diameter, containing burnt flint, charcoal and bone, none of which were urned. The features considered to be actual burials seem to form small groupings close to the line of a ditch which formed part of a larger enclosure (TQ 97 SE 44). The associated features containing "token" deposits were spread around the edges of the enclosure. Two features found possibly represent pyre sites, but the evidence is uncertain. Pottery fragments recovered date to the Late Bronze Age c.1400 - 700 BC. The human bone recovered was found to be in a highly fragmentary state making identification of skeletal elements difficult. Analysis of the bone fragments suggests that there are 11 "true" cremation burials, of adults and juveniles, the other deposits being cremation related. Two possible pyre sites were identified. (1-5)
