[TQ 73465600] Roman Remains found A.D.1862 [NAT] (1) A short distance east of the (former) chapel of St. Lawrence, before 1862, a square bottle of glass with a reeded handle, two samian dishes (forms 18/31 and 31) and a cup (form 33) stamped Comus (?Fec) together with six vessels of coarse pottery. (2) "A Roman urn found in the Hermitage Wood at Malling probably pointing out a burial ... " [Auth. 3 p.160, identifies this with the pre 1862 finds.] (3) RB Burials, Urns, etc. in Maidstone Mus. (4) The square glass bottle is on display in Maidstone Museum (No accession number). The remainder of the finds have not be located: they are not listed in the museum records. Authority 1 siting falls within a long established orchard. Siting on O.S. 1/1250 1956 at TQ 73405597 is in pastureland unploughed for many years.
