Full Description
Richmond Lodge was constructed sometime between 1840 and 1865. It appears on the 1886 OS Map, but is missing from a map of 1840 held in the Library of Chatham Dockyard. The site was purchased for the Crown (?William IV?) and was a Storekeeper's House c.1838. It was later used by Royal Engineers as a 'hunting lodge' for their Drag Pack. A drive surrounded an oval centre. Various outbuildings existed, the southerly of which abutted the drive (map 1952) and was perhaps kennels or carriage house. It was demolished sometime between 1961 and 1999. (1)
The cellar of Richmond House was uncovered when the service and foundation trenches for a new building (No 1 Upchat Road, Upnor) were excavated in 1999. It is unclear whether part of the cellar extends beyond the outline of the new house.
