Summary

Originally opened in 1881 as a hospital for infectious diseases. It went through a number of phases of redevelopment and change of function in the 20th century before its closure at the end of the century. It has now been demolished.

Full Description

Opened in 1882 as the Sittingbourne and Milton Joint Hospital for Infectious Diseases it was designed by W. Leonard Grant and built at a cost of £5000. It consisted of two wards, for 24 patients, an administration block with wash house, laundry, disinfecting house, ambulance house and small mortuary. a hospital for infectious diseases. It went through a number of phases of redevelopment particularly in 1915 when a new sanatorium was erected along with two pavilions, by the War Office, for the treatment of troops in the area with infectious diseases.

The function of the hospital changes during the 20th century and finally closed at the end of the century. It has now been demolished. One building has been retained by the NHS as an EMI unit. (1-3)
