Full Description

An archaeological watching brief on the site of a former works yard at Pleasant Row, Brompton, Gillingham, uncovered a disused well, probably dating from the 19th century. It was located in the south eastern part of the site, where the upper layers of material had already been removed, as they were contaminated with cyanide and been replaced with new material. The well was only visible below this new layer, the upper part of it presumably having been removed during the decontamination of the site. The surviving well structure was a circular construction of brown bricks, with no visible bonding material or recognised coursing pattern. It had a diameter of 1.2m and a surviving depth of 2.7m. The structure could not be drawn in any detail due to the unsafe nature of the trenches. No further archaeological remains or artefacts were observed on the site apart from a cut feature recorded in the western part of site of relatively modern date. It was concluded that the premonitoring removal of the contaminated ground from the eastern end of site, to such an extent and depth, had destroyed any surviving archaeological remains in this area.
The site was centred on grid ref (576010,168865) and was approx. 100m by 25m [1 and 2].
