Full Description
A compacted gravel layer found in the bottom of the cellar to No.44, High Street (TQ 76 NW 164). It is believed to be either a road or courtyard surface, although as there is only one surface it is thought more likely to be a courtyard surface of Roman date. Overlain by post medieval deposits (1).
Further work within the cellar of 44 High Street (TQ 76 NW 164). Below the post medieval cellar, two areas of masonry were exposed of possible Roman date, over the gravel layers interpreted as a Roman yard surface. Some Roman pottery was recovered during the evaluation work, although the report states that none of it helped to date specific deposits. It was of mixed date and a variety of wares [2].
