In 1922 an Anglo Saxon burial was discovered quarter of a mile north west of Preston Hall with a Jug of Frankish type, 2 blue glass vases, an imperfect jewelled brooch and 2 spearheads. In 1926 another jug and several spearheads were found. (9) Squat jars with trailed decoration, of 7th c. date, from Aylesford are now in Maidstone Museum. They depict body-trails nipped into a lattice pattern, known as the 'Aylesford' type. Such types consist entirely of dark blue glass and are usually found in pairs, as in this case. Such squat jars are rare on the continent and it seems likely that a British glass house must have specialised in this kind of jar. No less than 43 examples came from Faversham so we may guess that Kent, and perhaps Faversham itself, was the centre of fabrication. Only 11 squat jars have been found outside Kent. The majority of squat jars date to the seventh century and certainly lasted on into the eighth or even ninth century. (10)
