Full Description
A watching brief during the excavation of new foundations for a conservatory to the rear of 1 Vicarage Lane, Sandwich, revealed the patchy remains of a clay floor, occupation tread and robber trench of an early medieval stone rubble-built domestic building. The occupation deposit consisted of oyster shell, animal bone and daub, suggesting it was a trample layer, associated with the use and subsequent abandonment of the building. The robber trench was aligned with an existing portion of stone rubble walling, which now formed part of the garden wall. Taken together the features have been interpreted as forming part of a domestic building, which appears to have been partially demolished prior to the construction of the earliest phase of the Vicarage in the 15th century (just to the north). The remains were sealed by more recent garden soils dating to the last 250-300 years. [1].
