Full Description

Situated north west of manor Farm, just east of the Tennis courts and the pavillion. The well appears on the 1st edition map, but not the later additions. It appears on the map to serve a clay pit, with a tramway leading away from it across Upnor Road to the east. The well itself is shown on the map with three concentric circles around it, the largest approx 8.5m in diameter, situated within an old quarry cut.
Adam Single, Archaeological Officer with Kent County Council arranged for Hugh Farrer of the Kent Underground Research Group to visit the site in july 2005. He reported that the well is located at 574642, 170150. It was dry, 17.2m deep to rubbish. The shaft was 1.5m in diameter, brick steined to a depth of 1.95m to the natural chalk. The farmer is reportedly interested in capping or grilling the well, rather than infilling it.
