Monument record TQ 67 SW 329 - Possible Roman road discovered by resistance survey south of the A2

Summary

A resistivity survey was carried out south of the A2 at Springhead in 1993. The survey detected an two areas of high resistance and a particularly strong anomaly running north-east - south-west which may represent a Roman road

Full Description

In 1993 the Oxford Archaeological Unit carried out a geophysical survey of land immediately south of the A2 at Springhead. A gradiometer survey was carried out along a strip of land adjoining the A2 between New Barn Road and Park Corner Road but was unable to detect anything except modern anomalies. A resistivity survey was then carried oout on areas closer to New Barn Road and east of New Barn Road. To the west of New Barn Road two areas of high resistance were detected (TQ 67 SW 330). Immediately to the north of them, about 65m south of the A2, a strong north-east to south-west anomaly was detected which has been interpreted as a possible Roman road (1)
