Monument record TR 06 SW 248 - The Home Works, Gunpowder Mills, Faversham

Summary

The Home Works is the generic name used for the four groups of gunpowder mills located close to Faversham: Ospringe, Chart, Kings and Lower & Bennetts mills. Gunpowder was manufactured here from the 16th century, the works finally closing in 1934. From around 1760 to 1825, the mills were owned by the Crown and known as the Royal Gunpowder Mills. The sites of the mills have been largely built over but part of the Chart Mill has been restored by the Faversham Society.
