Summary

In 1962 an Anglo Saxon spearhead was found in a sandy knoll at Cobdown, Ditton. Any possible grave on the knoll was destroyed in the making of a cutting through the site. The spearhead is 9.5 inches long (24cm). The point and part of the socket are missing and it has an angular blade and split socket. It is in store at Maidstone Museum.

Full Description

[TQ 713588] An Anglo-Saxon spearhead was found in July 1962 by Master D Tamkin, in a cutting through a natural knoll of sand on Messrs Reed's playing fields, at Cobdown, Ditton, and is now in Maidstone Museum (Acc. No. 49, 1962). It is possible that the spearhead came from a grave on the top of the knoll which was destroyed in the making or widening of the cutting. The spearhead is 9.5 in. long (the point and part of the socket are missing and has an angular blade and split socket. (1) Master David Tomkin, the finder, of 608 London Raod, Ditton, indicated the exact findspot at TQ 71175877. The spearhead is in store in Maidstone Museum. (2) TQ 713588. A spear-head, 9.5 in. long with angular blade hand split socket was found jammed at the bottom of a cutting throug a sandy knoll, perhaps having fallen from a destroyed grave on top of the knoll. (3) Not listed in the Gazetteer of early Anglo Saxon burial sites. (4)
