Full Description

During the cutting of a building stanchion, a chalk cut shaft was uncovered. Approximately 2m in diameter, 6m + deep, the base formed into a bell shaped pit approximately 3-4m wide. The function and date of the shaft remain unknown, although it had been backfilled with modern material. The report suggests that it is either post medieval in date, associated with the site of a nearby cottage, or possibly the head of a prehistoric flint mine.
Alternatively, in the opinion of this compiler, the shaft could be associated with a nearby structure from the early twentieth brickworks, shown on the Edition 3 OS map [1 and heritage GIS map layers].
