Monument record TQ 76 NW 826 - Medieval town of Rochester
Summary
A new wall to replace the Roman wall was constructed in 1225 after the creation of a great ditch. In 1344 another wall was built outside the 1225 line but the ditch outside was never completed. This is now scheduled under a Grade I listing; part of these medieval city walls including battlements and good angle tower remain in Free School Lane. The Rochester City Walls were formerly listed as the Town Walls and incorporate Roman remains, with later patching and partial rebuilding. (For component records of medieval sites in Rochester see TQ 76 NW: 93, 94, 95, 97, 98 and 99).
