Findspot record TQ 67 SW 369 - Lower/Middle Palaeolithic Handaxe found near Tollgate

Summary

Fine pointed handaxe found in situ in May 1997, during HS1 evaluation at site "South-East of Tollgate" - site code ARC TGS 97, trench 1863TT. The handaxe was on a palaeo-landsurface and in association with several fresh condition waste flakes.

Full Description

Evaluation trenching on a section of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. During this work a lower palaeolithic biface, handaxe, was found. It had been moved, by soil movement, from its original location although not very far.(1)

Additional bibliography. (2) The site probably represents a minimally disturbed lithic working site on a palaeo-landsurface, but unfortunately no further investigation took place after the initial evaluation, before construction of HS1 through it.
