Possibly the former Saxon settlement of Cloveshoo (Cliffe-at-Hoo) where important church councils are reported as having been held between AD 742 and 825. In 774 Offa, King of Mercia, built a church to St Helen and a 13th century church of St Helen still stands here. Cliffe is thought to have been the centre of a Saxon estate.
